Gay Bars

  • Apr. 9th, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Gay bars are now my new favorite thing.

Some girlfriends and I went out to a bar to celebrate our high school friend's birthday. He has come out since high school and works as one of the dancer boys at this bar. The atmosphere was awesome. So many men, all affectionate and sweet. Don't know how to explain it. It was nice to be able to get drunk and dance without getting hit on. The gay bar is the perfect place for straight girls in relationships to have a "girls night out." Obviously, this was my first time going to a gay bar, and I loved it.

The glitzy cross-dressed host was awesome, and I really want his lipstick. The dancers were cool, too. All really good looking, and it was strange to see men dancing in such a provocative way. (I've never seen male strippers in action before). Instead of it being a highly erotic experience for me, it was just really gay, which was cool because no guilt set in.

After the boys were done dancing and earning their tips, the dance floor was open for everyone. My friends and I did the cupid shuffle, a little hard to do when you're being pushed against the railing ( a barrier used between "the boys" and the crowd), but it was still fun.

In other news, I realized how much I love food yesterday when Brandon and I finally went to Randazzo's produce market in Redford and bought a ton of fruit and veggies for under $20. Cheaper than the farmer's market. This place was heaven. I felt like I was in an Anthony Bourdain episode, shopping at the local food market, soaking up the culture of some foreign land. Cheesy, I know. But it was cool to be in a little neighborhood joint, where you could tell this was a weekly meetup place for the locals. Women chatted about what was new while they stood across from eachother, peeling corn husks. It was an open-air food market on a beautiful sunny day. I was in heaven.

I'm low-maintenance, obviously. I was still in heaven when we got home and opened the windows, played some bob marley, and cooked dinner. I think this is my favorite way to spend time with Brandon.

You see, we havn't gone grocery shopping for two weeks, and we had to go out for food all the time, mostly fast food, which I was getting sick of. So, I was really happy to finally be cooking something again. We had curried vegetables and quinoa with a salad.

I wish there was a Randazzo's closer to us. But I'll easily make the drive up I-696 every week.

Hanson

  • Mar. 28th, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Hanson is going to be in town next month. That's right. I said Hanson. They're going to be playing at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. I'm interested in just seeing how many people end up going inside to see them play.

Rilo Kiley is also going to be back at the ROMT after already playing here this past November. It was an awesome show, but don't think I want to spend the money on seeing them again so soon. I DO want to see Jack Johnson, though. I'm trying to win tickets off the radio because you also get to ride in a huge limo with three bars in it on the way there. I don't even know all of his songs, but I love the ones that I do know. I figure it would be an awesome, chillaxed way to spend a day. I need to go to more concerts. Of all the things to spend money on I think concerts are worth it.

In other news, I have applied yet again for another fantastic/awesome/incredible
opportunity-esque position, just in a different department. Sent in my resume. Pray for me.

I've been thinking, if I don't get this job, I might consider going to culinary school. I've become quite the foodie over the past few years since going veg, and would like to become a specialized chef in vegetarian cooking. There's just too many things that I want to do with my life! It's too hard to just pick one thing.

Trying to "tighten up" my squishy body before summer gets here. Started yesterday by going for a walk to the park and back to the apartment. Today I walked, of all places, to Baskin Robbins (to reward myself for my efforts) and then back to the apartment. So that equals about two miles each day. Not a bad start. Hopefully the weather will stop being so dumb and start getting warmer so I can get more exercise. This winter has been hard on me!

Yet another reason why Obama's got my vote

  • Mar. 17th, 2008 at 9:16 PM

March 16th, 2008

Senator Barack Obama has condemned the use of violence by China to put down peaceful protests in Tibet and called on the Chinese Government to respect the human rights of the Tibetans and to account for the detained demonstrators.

In a statement on March 14, 2008, Obama said these protests "demonstrate the continuing frustration of the Tibetan people at the way in which Beijing has ruled Tibet. There has been an informal dialogue between Chinese leaders and the Dalai Lama's representatives over the past six years. It is good that they have been talking, but China has thus far shown no flexibility on the substance of those discussions. Indeed, it has delayed in scheduling the latest round, despite the willingness of the Tibetans to continue dialogue.

Following is the full text of Obama's Statement.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the situation in Tibet

Chicago, IL | March 14, 2008

"I am deeply disturbed by reports of a crackdown and arrests ordered by Chinese authorities in the wake of peaceful protests by Tibetan Buddhist monks. I condemn the use of violence to put down peaceful protests, and call on the Chinese government to respect the basic human rights of the people of Tibet, and to account for the whereabouts of detained Buddhist monks.

These events come on the 49th anniversary of the exile of the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama. They demonstrate the continuing frustration of the Tibetan people at the way in which Beijing has ruled Tibet.

If Tibetans are to live in harmony with the rest of China's people, their religion and culture must be respected and protected. Tibet should enjoy genuine and meaningful autonomy. The Dalai Lama should be invited to visit China, as part of a process leading to his return.

This is the year of the Beijing Olympics. It represents an opportunity for China to show the world what it has accomplished in the last several decades. Those accomplishments have been extraordinary and China's people have a right to be proud of them, but the events in Tibet these last few days unfortunately show a different face of China. Now is the time for Beijing to take steps that would change the image people have of China later this year by changing the reality of how they treat Tibet and Tibetans. Now is the time to respect the human rights and religious freedom of the people of Tibet."

Best quote ever

  • Mar. 15th, 2008 at 1:25 AM

I bought a ticket to go see the Dalai Lama speak in Ann Arbor next month.  I figure it's a once in a lifetime opportunity and that I'd be stupid not to go.  My boyfriend doesn't want to go, and this upsets me.  I guess sometimes it's stil hard for me to accept, after four years, that we don't see eye to eye on everything, which is healthy.  Not complaining, but I guess it's really important to me and sometimes can't understand why he doesn't feel the same way.

No big deal though.  Amanda and her boyfriend are coming with me so I'm happy I won't be alone!

This is the best season of Lost EVER.  And I knew it was going to be Michael on that boat!  I knew it!  That show is like crack to me.

I'm stressed lately about money.  I started paying back my student loans this month, and between that and rent, my bank account pretty much gets drained every month.  Brandon and I have set up a system where we take turns paying rent and utilities every other month, so that I'm not completely broke all the time.  I'm also keeping track of my reciepts and recording ALL my spending so that I can figure out a budget.  Look at me all grown up!

I recently came across this quote and it makes me happy, yet sad at the same time!  It's an actual quote from an actual person and it's awesome:

Oh, Midwestern United States Suburbia........I can't wait to leave.

I'm stuck housesitting for my parents in my hometown of Belleville.  I saw my ex today.  He was my longest and most serious relationship before Brandon.  But now that I think back on it the whole relationship was a sad joke.  Anyway i saw him driving today in town and he got fat.

Wish me luck

Ok, so I just applied for a pretty sweet, awesome big position at the museum.  Well, it's a big deal for me at least.  I've never been paid a salary and this is the kind of work that I could actually call a "career."  Like, this is what I went to school for, ya know?

They called me for an interview the day after I emailed my resume.  That's pretty awesome, right?  All I have to do is have an awesome interview and I think I have a good chance of getting it.  I AM possibly going against people with master's degrees.  There's only been one job that I've interviewed for and didn't get.  I'm a pretty damn good interviewer.  But I'm nervous as f*ck.

Wish me luck.  The interview is tomorrow at 1pm.  If I get this job, I'm p-a-r-t-y-i-n-g.

my art space

  • Jan. 8th, 2008 at 12:41 AM

I'm working on setting up my myartspace page.  It's a lot easier to showcase your art on this site rather than myspace just because of the simple fact that it's specifically geared towards art!  I highly recommend it :)  I'm still going to keep my myspace art page because there's lots of galleries and what not.

I was on channel seven news today.  I was just walking around downtown royal oak and there was a camera crew (which is a common occurance around here...) and they said I looked "like spring."  Could it have been the skirt?  I don't know.  They asked me about how I felt about the warm weather in Janurary.  I was all excited about being on tv and texted almost everyone on my phone list.  Unfortunately they didn't air any of my "interview" and only showed a close up of my boots and then me walking away. :(  oh well.  My fifteen seconds of fame?

good ol' friends

  • Jan. 3rd, 2008 at 9:24 PM

Last week (see how long it takes me to get to blogging??) I just happened to be in belleville at the same time as a bunch of my high school friends.  I havn't seen these girls in forever because we are all so far apart!  We're all divided between up north, Grand Rapids, belleville, royal oak, nashville, TN and New York City!  I was invited to hang out with them at applebees and couldn't pass it up!

Whoa!

Barb Cervenka came into my work yesterday.  Talk about a blast from the past!

quick update

  • Dec. 11th, 2007 at 3:49 PM

I found a second job.  I'm now working at the DIA gift shop as well as Ariana Gallery in downtown Royal Oak.  The owner is awesome and things are relaxed and fun there.  I think that if it wasn't for the poor economy in Michigan Brandon and I wouldn't be able to afford to live here because it's a really nice area!  I mean, we're eight minutes away from Somerset Mall! (which, btw, has NO stores that I can afford to shop at).  We'll have to settle with Oakland Mall :)

Saturday night me, Brandon, Brandon's brother, and brandon's brother's girlfriend took a taxi to Wild Woody's and partied hardy.  Some assholes tried to pick a fight with brandon because he's tall.  Other than that, we all got our boogy on till the early morning, even though I had to work at 10 - 6 the next day!

While at the club, I had somewhat of a euphoric realization that things are pretty awesome right now, despite the fact that I'm spending all my money on paying rent and buying groceries rather than saving up for Grad school / paying off loans.  So, there is a downside.  I'm getting caught up in living life and losing focus on "the much larger plan"  or my "five year plan."  Our lease is up in 13 months. Hopefully either Brandon or I will be in grad school by then.  Cranbrook is right down the street.  Perhaps Brandon could go there.  Unfortunately there is no art history program there.

I just know that there was no way I could stay living with my parents, and spending all the gas money on driving to Detroit every day.  When the opportunity is there to live with your boyfriend and have a shorter drive to work, it's hard not to take it.

I'm probably being too hard on myself.  At least I'm still somewhat involved in the art world right now.  The fact that everyone I work with always asks, "so what are your plans with your degree?" will keep me on my toes about grad school.

But, for right now, I'm just going to enjoy what's happening.

Ta Da!

Here's our new living room and kitchen.

I'm not showing images of the other rooms because they are still too messy.  Come visit us!

I'm off to find a second job so that I can afford this place...  wish me luck!  I'm thinking Trader Joe's so that I can get a discount of gourmet food!

my middle school science teacher just messaged me on myspace.  She said she still has my dolphin echolocation project in her classroom!

hmph...

  • Nov. 15th, 2007 at 8:26 PM

So I decided to use livejournal again to keep in touch with college friends only to find that over half the people I added (all people I was friends with the first time around) havn't posted anything within the past year or so....

So I just deleted anyone who hasn't posted within the past year, assuming they don't use LJ anymore.

Oh well.  There's still a few people on here I care about as well as some sweet LJ communities .

Ahhhhh.......

  • Nov. 14th, 2007 at 8:41 PM

I didn't have to get my blood work done today... which is good because I would have passed out eventually because I barely ate today!  I do have to get it done before I move out though..... :(

My first day of work at the museum shop was today.  This is the first job I think I've ever really been excited about having... I guess besides my workstudy in college.  Anyway, this shop is huge and gorgeous.  I've decided I'm going to do all of my xmas shopping there.  I just can't get over all of the fabulous, unique and beautiful items they have in the shop.  It's part-time and hours are going to vary so I'm on the lookout for a second job.  I applied to Cranbrook University's art museum shop as well as the Detroit Science Center's.  If I don't get those I'll probably apply to Trader Joe's or something in Royal Oak so that I can get a discount on yummy organic food.  I just wish I didn't have to wait until Dec. 1st to move in.

BTW, I've probably mentioned this on myspace, but the huge grand opening for the DIA is the 23rd, and it's going to be open for 32 hours straight, and it's free.  I'll probably have to work a shift that day/night, but I definitly plan on attending the festivities between 10pm and 6am.  This includes a DJ, dancing, food and drinks as well as art performances and other random stuff.  I am so psyched for this!

I hope you all come!  If you do, I will try and get you free parking!  (I would have hop into your car and scan my i.d card).

Things I Like to Cook

  • Nov. 13th, 2007 at 10:22 PM

banana split cupcakes

green Thai curry

baked asparagus in phyllo dough with buttery white wine sauce

veggie-tofu kabobs in kung-pao marinade with hummus and pita bread

Brooklyn Pad Thai

**all vegan and yummy**

BTW,  Brandon and I are moving to Royal Oak on Dec. 1st!  Maybe we'll have a housewarming party or something!

My mom is making me get my blood drawn while I'm still on their insurance... for those of you that know me this is one of my absolute biggest fears!!!  The thought of a sharp object sucking my blood out of my vein turns me pale.. I'm probably going to make a huge ass out of myself.  If I die I love you all.. :P

P.S.

If there is anyone who is willing to drive out to Belleville to work at an art gallery, let me know.  There's a sales position available asap.
